Action AlertsAction Alert 02/19/2009 Forest Supervisor Letter Update Feb. 17, 2009The Forest Supervisor has observed the closure on Rd. 528 but will postpone any decision about the OHV closure point until spring when less snow makes it more accessible. He said that this road will be cleared to allow horse and foot travel. There is no discussion about the other closures at this time. This site will be updated as needed. The Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forests (GMUG)
consists of 5 Districts, one each located in Gunnison, Grand
Junction, Paonia, Montrose, and Norwood, Colorado. Each
District is controlled by a District Ranger (DR). The
headquarters, known as the Supervisor's Office (SO), is based in
Delta, Colorado. The person in charge of a National Forest
is called a Forest
Supervisor. The GMUG NF is a part of the Rocky
Mountain Region (R-2), located in Denver, Colorado. The
person in charge of Region 2 is called the Regional Forester (RF).
The RF answers to the Chief of the Forest Service in Washington
D.C. The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) is a part of the
Department of Agriculture (USDA). These pictures and
comments are because of recent efforts by one District Ranger,
and a wildlife biologist who are generally opposed to public
access on public lands. The pictures demonstrate how
access can easily be denied by a few Forest Service employees in
power. The routes discussed are no longer available for
use by horseback riders, mountain bikers, hikers, or
cross-country skiers. The loss to motorized use is a loss to all
forms of use. This site is done in an attempt to provide
awareness and knowledge about our public lands and their
officials. Live trees cut to eliminate public
use is estimated as over 1000 green trees.
